Per a Myspace blog post and a press release sent out to area media outlets by now-former frontman Cory Watson, local New Wave act Black Tie Dynasty–ever the line in the sand when it comes to area music fan tastes–has decided to call it quits. Says the band’s Myspace post:
“Black Tie Dynasty, has officially announced this week that we have decided to break up. Our final show has been confirmed for Saturday, March 28th at the Granada Theater. We’d like to thank all of you, our fans for your undying support and
wish we could have kept the band going forever, but we’ve decided to
shift our focus to our individual lives. We appreciate everyone who
purchased our albums, came to our shows and spread the word about the
band over the years. You will all be dearly missed.

The announcement comes less than two months after the band released its second full-length record, Down Like Anyone–one that saw BTD branching out and experimenting (quite successfully) with sounds beyond the New Wave one with which it had become widely associated.
“It’s an indication of where the third record will most likely go,” Watson told the Observer at the time. Obviously, at this point, plans for that third record have been scrapped.
Even despite its tumultuous reputation, Black Tie Dynasty was a band that accomplished quite a bit–having decent record sales, hitting the Billboard charts, earning legitimate area radio play, landing big time concert gigs.
But Black Tie Dynasty was a band with lofty, commercial goals. In the press release, Watson explains: “There are many reasons that forced us to make this
decision, but we’ve been a band for the last ten years…if something
was going to happen, it would have happened by now…we felt it was
time to turn the page.”

“Black Tie Dynasty Announces Their Break-Up”

Black Tie Dynasty, a staple of the Dallas Music Scene has officially
announced this week that they have decided to break up. Their final
show has been confirmed for Saturday, March 28th at the Granada
Theater.The band emphasizes that despite the move, their friendship still
remains intact. “There are many reasons that forced us to make this
decision, but we’ve been a band for the last ten years…if something
was going to happen, it would have happened by now…we felt it was
time to turn the page”, says singer/guitarist Cory Watson. “The
decision was based on a discussion we had long before we released our
LP, Down Like Anyone, so we’ve been quietly aware of this possibility
for some time”.The band experienced a great deal of local success with their 2005
Idol Records LP Movements, an album full of radio-ready hits and
received thousands of spins from 102.1 The Edge. The album sold over
10,000 copies worldwide and singles’ “Tender” and “I Like U” both
charted in the Billboard Top 100 in the same week! The band, however,
was sobered by the fact that even after those milestones were achieved
they were still not in a position to quit their day jobs and turn to
music full-time. The band took this in stride and decided to focus on
their next record, upon which they abandoned their formula of radio
ready songs in favor of a new sound that remained true to their
trademark but was carried out with a less commercial approach.They self-released their follow-up LP Down Like Anyone, in November
2008. Though they were proud of the album they made together it wasn’t
long before it was apparent to the band they were back where they
started. Watson continues,…”We knew going in, Down Like Anyone was a
less commercial record and if we didn’t have a hit on our hands with
Movements, this wasn’t the record that was going to achieve that same
level of commercial interest. However, we had to stay true to ourselves
as artists and we followed through with integrity and made a record
that we felt was much stronger than any of its predecessors”.The band wishes to thank all of its’ loyal fans in the Dallas/Ft. Worth
area and all over the world who have supported the band along the way
