You can rag on the Dallas Cowboys’ drafts. There have been as many whiffs as hits, no?

But before we condemn general manager Jerry Jones and his staff, along the way somebody’s doing something right. Mainly, the team’s scouting department.

I know, it’s that same department that has produced some stinkers like Stephen McGee, James Marten, Bobby Carpenter and Jacob Rogers. But let’s give some credit to College Scouting Coordinator Chris Hall.

Hall, one of the forgotten injured in the practice facility collapse last spring (he suffered torn knee ligaments and a separated shoulder), is one of the main men responsible for identifying players like oh, I dunno, undrafted free agents Tony Romo, Miles Austin and …

This year as many as five – five! – undrafted free agents may make the Cowboys’ final 53-man roster. Offensive lineman Phil Costa, running back Chris Gronkowski and defensive backs Barry Church, Bryan McCann and Danny McCray could be opening-day Cowboys.

McCray was a backup at LSU. McCann was an average player at SMU and Church played at Toldeo for crying out loud.

Sometimes it’s the little moves that pay big dividends.
